Two aqueous mixtures of cationic and anionic surfactants have been studied by means of conductometry, transmission electron microscopy, and microcalorimetry. In DTAB/SDS mixtures, however, precipitation of the catanionic surfactant occurs for a mole fraction of DTAB (x) between 0.3 and 0.7, while both vesicles and large bilayer fragments are formed for x = 0.8. The excess of DTAB in the x = 0.8 mixture results in the solubilization of the Vesicles by DTAB micelles close to the cmc of pure DTAB. A network of interconnected threadlike cylindrical micelles was found as an intermediate stage of aggregation between the vesicles and the mixed micelles. These cylindrical micelles are formed exclusively on further increasing the surfactant concentration.

Purpose: The antiepileptic effects of zonisamide (ZNS) have been well documented experimentally and clinically. The purpose of this study was to examine whether ZNS reduces cerebral damage after transient focal ischemia in rats. Methods: Ischemia was induced by a transient occlusion of the left middle cerebral artery (MCA) with a 3-0 nylon monofilament for 90 min. Neurological evaluation was performed by measuring the event of neurological deficit of the contralateral forepaw and hindpaw at 10 min and 1 day after MCA occlusion (MCAo). Results: The pre-or postischemic treatment with ZNS [(10-100 mg/kg p.o.), 30 min before and 4 h after or 15 min and 4 h after the occlusion] markedly reduced cerebral damage in the ipsilateral hemisphere and the neurological deficit induced by transient ischemia. The reducing effect on the damage was observed in the cortical and subcortical regions. Preischemic treatment with carbamazepine (CBZ 60 mg/kg p.o. twice 30 min before and 4 h after MCAo) tended to reduce the cerebral damage and neurological deficit, but the lower dose (20 mg/kg p.o. twice) did not. Valproate (VPA 1,000 mg/kg p.o. twice) also had no effect. Conclusions: ZNS at the anticonvulsant dose, unlike CBZ and VPA, ameliorated the brain infarction and the event of neurological deficit after transient focal cerebral ischemia. These data suggest that ZNS has therapeutic potential in protecting against ischemic cerebral damage, such as stroke.

Finally, a narrow range of activation parameters was calculated both for the reaction induced by different amines and for pyrrolidine and piperidine, in the presence of different ILs. This fact suggests the occurrence of an early transition state.

Novel non-cross-linked and cross-linked, hydrophobically modified homo- and copolymers were synthesized by free-radical cyclo(co)polymerization of alkylmethyldiallylammonium chloride monomers in aqueous solution using ammonium persulfate as the initiator. The hydrophobic microdomains of the non-cross-linked and cross-linked polysoaps were characterized by hypsochromic shifts of the long-wavelength absorption band of Methyl Orange as a solvatochromic probe, non-covalently bound to the macromolecule. Catalysis of the unimolecular decarboxylation of 6-nitrobenzisoxazole-3-carboxylate by the non-cross-linked and crosslinked copolymers was investigated in aqueous solution at pH 11.3 and 30 degrees C. The cross-linked polysoaps exhibited higher catalytic activities for decarboxylation than the corresponding non-cross-linked analogues. A maximum in rate constant was found at about 0.2% (w/w) of cross-linking agent in the cross-linked polysoaps. The decarboxylation rate is strongly dependent upon the hydrophobic group content in the polysoaps.
